Emergency Shelter Staff Training and Retention

By Mark Poskitt

Partner Organization: Homelessness Services Association of BC (HSABC)

The aim of this research project was to explore issues of burnout and low retention rates among the staff of emergency shelters across British Columbia. The work performed by shelter staff is difficult, particularly in the context of today’s opioid crisis, and exposes them to significant stress and trauma and for relatively low wages. The findings are based on an analysis of the experience of the staff at four emergency shelters across British Columbia and a literature review. The report concludes with five recommendations to address the key issues in staff training, support, and retention.
