Innovative Seniors Housing

By Alli Henry, Alexandra Heinen, and Andrea Witoszkin

Partner Organization: Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation (CMHC)

This research project reviewed literature to identify and outline options for housing for seniors that provide alternatives to conventional care-based models (independent care, assisted living, nursing home, living with children, etc.), while being cost-effective and/or providing better quality of life. The report describes a number of approaches from local and international contexts, providing specific examples, including Abbeyfield House, homeshare and multi-general programs, dementia villages, seniors’ villages and mixed-use developments.
